James Irvine | Angostura Bitters Australia Brand Ambassador meets with,

Daniyel Jones | Global Brand Ambassador for Angostura di Amaro.

The two international drink men joined together for a national Australia tour to launch Amaro di Angostura in 2016. After traveling the country the boys chatted with Drinks Network while on set for the Amaro shoot about all things new world spirits.

Things in the spirits world used to be so simple. The Scottish made Whisky, The Russians and the Poles made Vodka, the Caribbean’s made Rum, the English made Gin and the Italians made Amaro Liqueurs. The international liquor trade was dominated by products from countries who were synonymous with their traditional spirits.

This began to change on an international level by the mid-20th Century with brands like Absolut emerging on the global Vodka stage from the less traditional vodka producing nation of Sweden and Japanese Whisky giving the Scots a run for their money.

Suddenly, consumers were becoming more adventurous with the heritage of their products and took pride in discovering spirits and liqueurs hailing from non-traditional countries.

This trend has culminated more recently with the explosion of craft distilling and the rise of the craft bartender.

The rise of the craft spirit movement Australia has been well documented, with a Tasmanian Whisky (Sullivans Cove) winning the The World’s Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards 2014 and a new Aussie Gin seemingly released every week!

One of the last bastions of traditional spirits where heritage and tradition still dominate is the world of Liqueurs and particularly Amaro Liqueurs. Italy dominates this category but a new player has arrived to disrupt and shake up the old regime.

The House Of Angostura has over 190 years of distilling experience with their famous Angostura Bitters so they were perfectly placed to answer the call of top bartenders who wanted to see a new and interesting variation to the Amaro category.

“Launched in 2015 and now available in Australia, Amaro DI Angostura is made from a neutral base spirit using the same molasses as the rum, infused with a blend of roots, barks and spices for three months with house-made caramel added.”

Unlike many European Amari, Amaro di Angostura has a strong Caribbean spice orientation rather than the traditional Italian dominant herbal notes, and it is the only Amaro to have Angostura bitters in it.

A truly exciting New World edition to the most traditional of old world categories of spirits and liqueurs!

It is his fun-loving spirit of adventure that continues to inspire the House of Angostura today.
